AIDS Walk this Sunday, CareNow LA next Saturday, & Ethiopia!

Hey everyone,

If you haven’t registered for the AIDS Walk this Sunday, please do so! We have drivers, so don’t worry about getting there. It should be a lot of fun. Please see the event page for information on how to register and RSVP.

Also, we will be selling AIDS Walk buttons on Trousdale this Wednesday and Thursday between 10-2. Stop by, grab a button for $2, a Diddy Riese cookie for $1, and support your club!

Next Saturday is CareNow LA, so also be sure to sign up for that team. This event is within walking distance at the Coliseum.

Also, exciting news: We are currently in the works of planning a trip to Ethiopia next summer! In country, we will be doing a research project at 2 universities, working alongside Ethiopian public health students. The trip will be about 2 weeks. That is all the details we have now, but we will have applications for interested members early next semester. Club involvement will be heavily accounted for in the application process.

Have a good week!

General Meeting THIS Wednesday, and Some More Updates:

Hey guys,

This Wednesday come out to this month’s general meeting! We will be discussing upcoming projects and events as well as forming our committees: Local Projects, Global Projects, Fundraising, and Public Relations. The chairs will be there to answer any questions and get all you started with their committee. You do NOT have to apply to join one, and if you can’t make the meeting but still would like to join please email us at uscglobalhealthclub@gmail.com. The meeting is at 7 PM in VKC 150.

The AIDS Walk Los Angeles is in 2 weeks, so make sure to register online and invite all of your friends to walk with us! See the Event Page for information on how to register, and to RSVP to our club email. The walk will take place through a park in West Hollywood, so this is a great chance to explore LA while walking for a good cause. Some drivers have already volunteered and there is a bus that goes directly to the park from SC, so don’t hesitate to sign up because of transportation. If you can drive, please also let us know this.

The “Fight on Against AIDS” buttons we will be selling as a fundraiser for AIDS Walk have arrived, and we will be tabling on Trousdale this week and next to sell them. We will also have them for sale at our meeting this Wednesday. Each button is $2. It would be really great if everyone could try to sell them on their own to friends/family/roommates/floor etc., so make sure to come to the meeting and pick some up if you can.

Also, this month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! The bookstore is selling t-shirts to support breast cancer research and the Norris Cancer Center. This month THINK PINK!

Hey all!

To those of you who came out to tonight’s meeting, it was great meeting you–this semester already is looking awesome! For those of you who couldn’t make it, don’t worry. Make sure you are on our email list (if you aren’t getting our emails, be sure to fill out the Membership form above) and meeting minutes will be sent to you. Additionally, keep checking this site and our Facebook page to stay involved.

Applications for leadership positions are now active. Make sure to apply, even if you have no experience–we are looking for interested and passionate people to help us run the club, regardless of what you’ve done before! See the tab above, and get your application in by next Thursday at 5.

Upcoming events include:

Ethiopia Book Drive: Come help us organize medical texts to send to our partner medical school in Ethiopia! We will be going as a group to HSC on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon. Thursday we are meeting at the HSC tram stop (in front of the JEP house) at 8:30 AM and Meghan and I will be there until 11:30. Friday we are meeting at the tram stop at 3 PM and staying until later that afternoon (FREE PIZZA). Feel free to come/leave whenever you need to–the tram ride is short. If you do come apart from the group, please call/text me for directions: (203) 313-3514.

The Great American Dineout: Come to a club dinner at Togos on Vermont to help end childhood hunger in America! A great way to give back while enjoying some tasty sandwiches. This will be held on Wednesday, 9/21 at the usual meeting time (7 PM). RSVP on the Event RSVP Page–we need a rough head count so we know how much food to order. A minimal fee may be required (at most $5-$10, but we’re working on getting it entirely funded).

CareNow LA: Saturday, 10/22 from 12-5 PM. Come volunteer at the Coliseum to provide medical services to the uninsured members of the community! See the Event RSVP page for details on how to register through CareNow USA’s website. More information will be provided as the date nears. Contact Chelsea with any questions.

Other events for September include the Global Projects Student Panel and a fundraiser through Seattle’s Best. More information will be provided on these events once dates are finalized.

Have a great week guys, and hopefully see you at the book drive!

Informational Meeting Location and More!

Come on out to the first USC GHC informational meeting, this Wednesday, August 31st at 7 PM in WPH 207. Learn about our club, hear the upcoming events we have planned for this semester and beyond, and hear about how you can get involved immediately!

At the informational meeting, we will also be giving out information regarding available leadership positions for the 2011-2012 school year. If you can’t make it to the meeting, please feel free to fill out an application (see tab above) regardless. Applications will be due Thursday, September 8th, at 5PM. No experience necessary–if you have an interest in global health, we’re interested in having you on our board! Freshmen and upperclassmen alike, this is a great way to get involved in a leadership position at USC.

Want to get involved in USC GHC right away? Right now, we are in the middle of a book drive that will send medical textbooks to health workers in Ethiopia who do not have access to them. We have collected over 100 boxes of medical texts, and need help sorting them to ship out to the school in Ethiopia! This week, we will be taking the tram over to the Health Sciences Campus on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon. On Thursday, we will meet at the tram stop (in front of the JEP house, by the finger fountain) at 8:30 AM. Trams run every half hour, so if you need to come later or leave early you can come over on your own as well. On Friday, we will meet at the tram stop at 3:00 PM, but again feel free to come at your convenience. We will also have pizza for you all on Friday, so come get some free food!

Looking forward to seeing you all Wednesday!
